When Rihanna tweeted out a photo of her new "Thug Life" tattoo scrolled across her fingers on Wednesday, fans immediately began to flood the singer with tweets, asking her why she got it and what it all means. She tweeted photos of herself at the Shamrock Social Club parlor in Hollywood with tattoo artist Mark Mahoney, as well as actor Danny Trejo, who was also at the tattoo parlor that night.

"I #LOVE my new tattoo!!! Can't wait for yall to see it!!! I got it in 'Tibetan' this time!!! #approved," she wrote of her white-toned tat, an homage to rapper Tupac.

Rihanna met most criticism or praise with a sense of humor about her latest ink. "Chill babes #noshade. Err'body has an opinion, but yall know what yall can do with them!!! #THUGLIFE," she wrote.

"I'm thinking I shoulda got a tear drop instead!!! #THUGLIFE maybe next time," Rihanna later tweeted, joking about the possibility of getting the traditional prison tat on her famous face. "All eyes on Rih, betta picture me rollin' #THUGLIFE."

But the tweets hardly stopped there, and they progressively got more provocative, especially when one of her followers tweeted, "You're not a thug. stop it."

Later declaring "#RIHPac back!!!," she continued to go on her tat-driven Twitter spree, adding, "I can't deny it, ima riot..u don't wanna f--- with me!"

In another tweet, the star said, "NEVER!!! RT @Fiend4sports: @rihanna Thug Life!! Don't let Pac memory ever die."

Asia stocks advance amid positive US jobs data

BANGKOK (AP) ? Asian stock markets rose Friday as strong earnings and positive jobs data out of the U.S. added to hopes that the economic recovery in the world's largest economy is for real.

Japan's Nikkei 225 index rose 1.2 percent to 8,744.15. South Korea's Kospi rose 0.9 percent to 1,932.71. Hong Kong's Hang Seng added 0.2 percent to 19,989.15 and Australia's S&P/ASX 200 was 0.5 percent higher at 4,234.70.

Benchmarks in Singapore, New Zealand and mainland China were also higher. Taiwan markets were closed ahead of Chinese New Year, which starts Monday.

Strong corporate earnings reports in the U.S. boosted investor tolerance for risk assets like stocks. IBM Corp.'s fourth-quarter earnings also beat Wall Street expectations. Bank of America and Morgan Stanley both reported results that were better than analysts were expecting.

That helped lift shares in Japan's major banks, including Mitsubishi UFJ Financial Group, which jumped 4.8 percent, and Mizuho Financial Group, up 4.6 percent. Nomura Holdings added 3.4 percent.

On top of earnings came data that showed the U.S. job market is strengthening. The number of people seeking unemployment benefits fell last week to 352,000, the fewest since April 2008.

Resources stocks advanced following strong gains in metals prices overnight.

Mining giant Rio Tinto Ltd. rose 0.8 percent. Fortescue Metals Group, Australia's third-biggest iron ore producer, gained 1.2 percent.

Meanwhile, France and Spain held successful bond auctions, their first since Standard & Poor's downgraded their credit ratings last week. The result was a sign that politicians and central bankers have at least temporarily stemmed the spread of Europe's debt crisis.

Analysts warn, however, that a looming recession could hinder efforts to slash deficits while Greece depends on a deal with banks to avoid a disastrous default this spring. Closely watched debt-restructuring negotiations are taking place this week between Athens and private creditors. Failure to seal an agreement would likely result in a financially disastrous default by Greece.

"For the moment, the market expects a deal to be made while downside risk still exists and any disappointment could end the week of rallies," Credit Agricole CIB in Hong Kong said in an email.

The Dow Jones industrial average gained 0.4 percent to close at 12,623.98. The Standard & Poor's 500 index added 0.5 percent to close at 1,314.50. Both averages are at their highest since July. The Nasdaq added 0.7 percent to close at 2,788.33.

Benchmark crude for February delivery was down 4 cents at $100.35 a barrel in electronic trading on the New York Mercantile Exchange.

Oregon Scientific's Time and Wireless Charging Station+ does what it says

Oregon Scientific Time and Wireless Charging Station+
Oregon Scientific isn't usually known for making gadgets that get cozy with phones and whatnot, but this year we'll be seeing some changes. For starters, this Time and Wireless Charging Station+ will be the company's second Qi wireless charging station, and it shares many similarities with its smaller predecessor (which is conveniently dubbed Time & Weather Charging Station): you get a single charging pad along with a monochrome LCD for the time, indoor temperature and outdoor temperature (five channels; one sensor included). Of course, the plus sign in the name means there are some extra goodies, namely a radio-controlled clock, a barometer for weather forecast plus a projector for the time and temperature; but you'll need to pick up your own Qi phone sleeve -- Oregon Scientific sells one for the iPhone 4. Expect to see this clock on the market at some point for around $129.

U.S. authorities probe U.S.-China commission email hack (Reuters)

(Reuters) ? U.S. authorities are investigating allegations that an Indian government spy unit hacked into emails of an official U.S. commission that monitors economic and security relations between the United States and China, including cyber-security issues.

The request for an investigation came after hackers posted on the Internet what purports to be an Indian military intelligence document on cyber-spying, which discusses plans to target the commission - apparently using technical know-how provided by Western mobile phone manufacturers.

Appended to the document are transcripts of what are said to be email exchanges among commission members.

"We are aware of these reports and have contacted relevant authorities to investigate the matter. We are unable to make further comments at this time," Jonathan Weston, a spokesman for the U.S.-China Economic and Security Review Commission, said on Monday.

The document's authenticity could not be independently verified. But the U.S.-China commission is not denying the authenticity of the emails.

Officials in India could not be reached for comment on the document's content or authenticity. One India-based website quoted an unnamed army representative as denying that India used mobile companies to spy on the commission and calling the documents forged.

The purported memo says that India cut a technological agreement - the details are not clear - with mobile phone manufacturers "in exchange for the Indian market presence." It cites three: Research in Motion, maker of the BlackBerry; Nokia; and Apple.

Apple spokeswoman Trudy Muller said her company had not provided the Indian government with backdoor access to its products. A spokesman for Nokia declined comment; RIM officials could not be reached for comment.

The U.S. Congress created the commission in 2000 to investigate and report on the national security implications of the economic relationship between the United States and China. The bipartisan, 12-member panel holds periodic hearings each year on China-related topics such as cyber security, weapons proliferation, energy, international trade compliance, and information policy.

The email breach, if confirmed, would be the latest in a series of cyber intrusions that have struck U.S. institutions ranging from the Pentagon and defense contractors to Google Inc.

A group calling itself the Lords of Dharmaraja said in an internet post that it had uncovered the hacking. It said it had discovered the source codes of a dozen software companies in Indian Military Intelligence servers.

A U.S. government official, who asked not to be identified, said the matter is under investigation. The FBI has jurisdiction to investigate cyber-hacking inside the United States. An FBI spokesman declined to comment.

Many of the previous hacks have been blamed on China. In this case, it is unclear whether India might have been eavesdropping on the U.S.-China commission for itself or sought to pass any information collected to authorities in China.

INDIA INTERESTED

India would be intensely interested in the official U.S. view of Beijing. Ties between the two countries, which fought a brief border war in 1962, remain difficult. New Delhi sees Beijing as a long-term rival.

Stewart Baker, a former cyber-security policy expert at the National Security Agency and U.S. Department of Homeland Security, said the commission "would be a high-priority target for China, since USCC has been one of the most vocal U.S. agencies in warning against Chinese hacking."

"What's interesting is that they seem to have become a target for India for the same reason," Baker said. "If it's genuine, it should cause red faces all around. At USCC for apparently getting hacked by Indian intelligence, and even more so at Indian intelligence for getting hacked by what may be a bunch of amateurs."

The purported emails between U.S.-China commission staff members, dating from September and October 2011, include discussions of how senior analysts from the Office of the Director of National Intelligence were scheduling a classified briefing for commission officials on a forthcoming National Intelligence Estimate looking at global manufacturing trends.

The messages also contain discussions between commission staff members about legislation pending in Congress related to alleged currency manipulation by China.

In one email, a staff member, reacting to criticism that a China currency bill pending on Capitol Hill would be "ineffective," argues: "Don't make the perfect the enemy of the good; we should confront bullies even if there is a risk we will get punched back."

The emails are attached to what purports to be a memo dated October 6 and signed by a Colonel Ishwal Singh of India's Directorate General of Military Intelligence, Foreign Division.

In the memo, Singh describes how "the President" had given "sanction" to an operation "to gain access to USCC transmittals." What "President" the memo is referring to is not further explained.

According to the memo, because "MI" - presumably Military Intelligence - had trouble accessing U.S.-China commission cyber networks, the "decision was made earlier this year to sign an agreement with mobile manufacturers (MM) in exchange for the Indian market presence."

One U.S. law enforcement official said the commission would be a logical target for intense surveillance by Chinese authorities, since its principal mission was to produce policy studies and recommendations about the U.S.-China relationship.

In October 2009 the commission produced a detailed study on the "Capability of the People's Republic of China to Conduct Cyber Warfare and Computer Network Exploitation." A spokesman for the commission said it was working on a second study of cyber security issues related to China.

Griffin PowerBlock Reserve hands-on (video)

Griffin's PowerBlock reserve is a 2000mA battery that's packing a power plug on one end and a USB port on the other, designed for weary travelers who need to get some more juice from their smartphone. If we're honest, it looks like an enormous chocolate bar, but the sort of not-delicious sort that'll push your iPhone's battery back to 80 percent from cold on a full charge. It'll cost you $59.99 for a version that comes with an USB to Apple connector cable or $49.99 if you'd rather supply your own.

Dana Murph contributed to this report.

The Legal Brief: The New Paradigm

Attorney David Perlman argues that recent years have given rise to a? new paradigm for legal briefs:

The new paradigm has five essential

elements. A brief should state a theme

at the outset; relay the facts through

a flowing, engaging story, creating

an initial impression of who should

prevail; zero in on the essential legal

authority, yet, at the same time, anchor

legal argument to underlying policies

and principles; display a literary style

that is relaxed, conversational, and nonpedantic;

and appeal to the eye.

Review: "Enchanted Island" a clever Met concoction (AP)

NEW YORK ? Call it a pastiche. Or a Baroque fantasy in two acts. Or the best opera Handel and Vivaldi never wrote.

By any name, "The Enchanted Island," which had its world premiere at the Metropolitan Opera on New Year's Eve with an all-star cast, is irresistibly entertaining. It's a light-hearted romp with enough fizz to send a dozen Champagne corks popping, and its only serious drawback is that at 3 1/2 hours running time it serves up a bit too much of a good thing.

The concoction was the brainchild of Peter Gelb, the Met's general manager who wanted to expand the company's Baroque repertory in a way that would create a stir and draw in new audiences. So he reinvented a 300-year-old gimmick, the "pasticcio" in which already existing music by several composers was fitted to a new libretto and plot.

Baroque specialist William Christie was engaged to oversee the musical preparation and conduct, and writer/director Jeremy Sams crafted the libretto. It was his clever idea to combine two Shakespeare plots: The quartet of lovers from "A Midsummer Night's Dream" get shipwrecked on Prospero's island from "The Tempest"; a major outbreak of mistaken identity ensues, and it takes all manner of magic spells ? not to mention intervention by the sea god Neptune ? to straighten things out again.

To bring their creation to life on stage, the Met wisely hired Phelim McDermott and Julian Crouch to design and direct the production, Kevin Pollard to do the costumes, and a company called 59 Productions to provide animation and projections. Their inspired work on Philip Glass' "Satyagraha" was on view earlier this season, and they have again done wonders, creating eye-popping magical effects with the humblest of means.

The basic set is a deliberately old-fashioned proscenium frame with Prospero's book-lined lair on the left and on the right the primeval dwelling of Sycorax, the sorceress whose magic he has usurped. (The mother of the wild Caliban, she is mentioned but does not appear in the Shakespeare play.)

At the rear, a curtain rises for the ocean scenes ? starting with a rollicking shipwreck in which the four honeymooning lovers sing of "Days of pleasure, nights of love," (adapted from Handel's "Semele") only to see their boat capsize in a sudden storm. When Neptune makes his first appearance near the end of Act 1, he does so seated on a clam-shell throne, with mermaids dangling from ropes behind him.

The cast reads like a list of reigning stars in Baroque opera today, from countertenor David Daniels to mezzo-soprano Joyce DiDonato, from soprano Danielle DeNiese to bass-baritone Luca Pisaroni. And let's not forget the fellow playing Neptune ? a certain 70-year-old tenor named Placido Domingo.

DiDonato tears into the role of Sycorax with abandon, rolling on the floor and waving her arms as she plots vengeance against Prospero. But her most effective scene ? and the emotional highlight of the evening ? is a tender song comforting her son, whose heart has just been broken by one of the shipwrecked women. The music is from a cantata, "Il Pianto di Maria," that was long attributed to Handel but now is credited to the Italian composer Ferrandini.

Part of what makes that scene so moving is the amazing performance by Pisaroni as Caliban. Although he sings up a storm elsewhere in the opera, here, without uttering a word but using facial expression and body movement, he indelibly conveys his character's grief, anger and finally acceptance.

Daniels has a more difficult challenge as Prospero, frankly the weakest character in Sams' generally first-rate libretto and one whose moral dilemma never quite clicks. His arias, though sung with fervor, tend to slow things down just when we want them to be fast-forwarded.

No such problem for his attendant sprite Ariel, as portrayed by DeNiese, a live wire whose extroverted show-biz personality perfectly suits the production. She deservedly stops the show with her final aria, a rapid-fire celebration of her newly gained freedom sung to music from Vivaldi's "Griselda."

As Miranda, Prospero's lovesick daughter, Lisette Oropesa displays a shining lyric soprano, and her duet ("I have dreamed you" from a Handel cantata) with the Ferdinand of countertenor Anthony Roth Costanza is sublime.

The four honeymooners are all terrific as well: tenor Paul Appleby as Demetrius, soprano Layla Claire as Helena, baritone Elliot Madore as Lysander, and especially mezzo Elizabeth DeShong as Hermia.

Domingo doesn't have much to sing, but Neptune is the perfect role for him at this late stage of his career. His mere entrance inspires a tangle of emotions ? part hilarity, part nostalgia and part awe. Despite his sometimes mangled English, he brings great authority to the part, and that familiar muscular tenor sound still rings out once or twice on sustained high notes.

The Enchanted Island" will play nine more times through Jan. 30. The matinee on Saturday, Jan. 21, will be broadcast on the radio and also shown in HD in movie theaters in the U.S. and around the world.
